m8 – DJ Scratching

I really, really like time-stretching on the m8 but I wondered if I could - through some complex modulations and Table commands - approximate something like "DJ Scratching" of a sample. The idea struck me at about midnight on a work night ... and I just couldn't let it go. So I booted back up the Project and started to get my hands dirty.

To my surprise - I had a working concept within maybe 15 minutes. The general idea is as follows:

  • Time-stretching uses the Start Position and a short Length to act as a play head - moving through the sample as instructed by the Modulator settings.
  • If the Modulator begins play as normal but - at a determined point in time - is modulated by another Modulator - we can slow down or speed up the motion of the play head.
  • To achieve the pitch adjustments of the record slowing down / speeding up we can also use a Modulator to affect the Pitch of the playback.
  • For control of when these events fire, we can use Table commands to set the Amount of the aforementioned Modulators.
  • Bonus points: why not gratuitously use Table commands to further add spice into the mix?
    • Side note: I always add Spice. Even if it's just random Pan adjustments. Keeping the Sample moving is a great way to retain listener interest.

In the m8 Bundle below, Track 6 is only Chains that trigger an instrument loaded with a sample to demonstrate the DJ Scratching technique.
