The 3dVCA (link) by Mystic Circuits takes a fundamental building block of synthesis (the VCA - Voltage Controlled Amplifier) and uses four of them behind an intuitive design to throw your sound sources into three-dimensional space. If you're thinking of Quadraphonic Sound from the 1970's - you're in the ballpark.
